Lithuania has officially withdrawn from the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (Ottawa Convention). The Ministry of Defense of the Baltic Republic announced that the deadline for the necessary procedures expired on December 27.
"Six months have passed since the notification to the UN Secretary General about withdrawing from the convention," the statement said.
Leaving the convention means the possibility of using, storing and producing this type of ammunition. As Lithuanian Deputy Defense Minister Karolis Aleksa previously noted, after withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, Lithuania plans to jointly produce anti-personnel mines with Finland in 2026 for its own use and distribution to Ukraine.
It has been reported that hundreds of millions of euros will be allocated for this purpose.
