South Korean President Lee Jae-myung proposed to include the treatment of hair loss in the state medical insurance system, stressing that baldness is no longer just a cosmetic problem for young people, but has become a serious social and psychological challenge.
As reported by The Guardian, he noted that especially for young men, hair loss has become a "matter of survival". South Korea has a universal health insurance system that is funded by income-based contributions.
Currently, insurance only covers hair loss treatment for medical reasons, but most treatments for male pattern baldness are not included in the system.
According to his assessment, many citizens regularly pay insurance premiums, but do not receive tangible benefits, as a result of which, especially among young people, the feeling of injustice and alienation grows.
