The Swiss Parliament has elected Economy Minister Guy Parmelen as the President of 2026. he will replace Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter.

Although the position of president is largely ceremonial, it has received attention due to trade negotiations with the United States. Last year, Karin Keller-Sutter was directly involved in tariff negotiations with the White House. After his call with US President Donald Trump in April, he suspended part of a trade attack against Switzerland. Further negotiation attempts failed in July.

The 66-year-old economy minister is responsible for trade, and under his leadership, Switzerland reached an agreement with the United States in mid-November. The new tariffs, 15% for most products, instead of the previous 39%, have not yet entered into force.
