The European Commission did not invite Georgia to the EU enlargement forum to be held on November 18 because of its "democratic retreat", European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier said at a briefing in Brussels.
"We recently published a report on the progress of the candidate countries, in which it was stated that now we consider Georgia only a nominal candidate for the EU.
We note with regret Georgia's continued departure from the European democratic path. Yes, we can confirm that Georgia was not invited to our forum for these reasons," he said, answering the journalists' question.
The EU enlargement forum, which will be attended by high-level politicians from European institutions and EU candidate countries, will be held for the first time in Brussels on November 18.
