The US Treasury Department announced on Monday that the United States is maintaining sanctions against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad while exempting Syria from the comprehensive sanctions regime.
"Sanctions remain in effect against Bashar al-Assad and his associates, previously linked to Syria's proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," the statement said.
It is noted that the sanctions also remain in force against persons associated with the terrorist organizations ISIL (an organization banned in Russia) and Al-Qaeda (an organization banned in Russia).
