Syria fulfills its obligations to fight terrorism. Department of State

The Syrian authorities are fulfilling their obligations to fight against terrorism and drugs, as well as to destroy the remaining chemical weapons in the country, the US State Department announced.

"Under the leadership of President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the new Syrian government is making every effort to save Americans, fulfill its obligations to fight terrorism and drugs, destroy the remaining chemical weapons, and promote regional security and stability," the agency reported.

The State Department explained that the sanctions were lifted "in recognition of the progress made by the Syrian leadership."

On Friday, the United States officially lifted sanctions against Syria's transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, ahead of his visit to Washington with the US president. On Thursday, the UN Security Council voted to lift the sanctions.
