Found a type of depression that increases the risk of heart disease

Melancholic depression increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, while non-typical depression, type 2 diabetes risk. This conclusion was scientists from the University of Amsterdam. The results of the study were presented in the Congress of the European Cardiology Association (ECNP) in Amsterdam.

Scientists have reached these conclusions through a long research of adult participants without initial signs of heart disease or diabetes. People with symptoms of non-typical depression, drowsiness, chronic fatigue and appetite, have almost 2.7 times higher the risk of developing diabetes than those who did not have depression symptoms. However, there was no significant increase in cardiovascular disease in this group.

Unlike it, participants with melancholic symptoms, insomnia and loss of appetite, more prone to heart attacks and strokes. The risk of their cardiovascular complications was about one and a half times higher, while scientists did not find out contact with diabetes.

Metabolism analysis revealed differences between biochemistry. Patients with non-typical depression have shown inflammatory and metabolic disorders. According to Dr. Yuri Milanesky, the main author of the study emphasizes the need for a more accurate, personalized approach to treatment of mental disorders, given the physical risks associated with them.
