The President of Georgia filed a lawsuit against the "Transparency of Foreign Influence" law


The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, appealed to the Constitutional Court of the country with a claim against the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence". According to Armenpress, the parliamentary secretary of the head of state, Giorgi Mskhiladze, announced this in a briefing. The lawsuit refers to the "Foreign Influence Transparency" law, the so-called Russian law. The aforementioned law is unconstitutional," Mskhiladze was quoted as saying by the Public Broadcasting Company of Georgia. The official added that the president demands to suspend the operation of the said law and cancel it once and for all. At the same time, Givi Mikanadze, the head of the parliamentary committee on education, science and youth issues, said in a briefing. is that the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence, which the Georgian Parliament adopted in May 2024, will enter into force in a few weeks. The law obliges non-governmental organizations and media that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as an organization promoting the interests of a foreign power. The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that such legislation is necessary to ensure the financial transparency of grant recipients. Due to the adoption of the above-mentioned law, the EU suspended the accession process of Georgia.
