Elections in Romania: ruling Social Democrats lead

Deutsche Welle - After processing about 98 percent of the ballots in Romania's parliamentary elections, the pro-Western PSD tops the list with 23 percent of the votes.

After the polls close in Romania's parliamentary elections on Sunday, December 1, the country's ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) is winning the largest number of votes at the time of publication. According to online vote counting data, after processing about 98 percent of the ballots, PSD receives 23.07 percent. It is followed by the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) with 18 percent of the vote, while the center-right National Liberal Party is in third place with 14.55 percent.

According to previously announced exit polls, PSD received 26% of the votes, AUR - 19%. However, all far-right parties achieved great success, experts noted - their combined result was about 30%. If the final election results are confirmed by exit polls, the pro-Western coalition led by the PSD is likely to win enough seats in parliament to form a government. Romania's Social Democratic Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku in his exit poll comments said the country must continue on its European path, "defending its identity, national values and faith."
