Mark Libby, the United States ambassador to Azerbaijan, announced the other day that Yerevan and Baku, with the active support of Washington, are working towards the creation of an integrated scheme for the management of water resources of transboundary rivers.
In order to get clarifications about the statement of the US ambassador in Baku, "Armenpress" sent requests to the ministries of foreign affairs and environment of Armenia. The RA Ministry of Environment has informed that there is no official cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the field of water management of transboundary rivers.
"There is no official cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the field of water management of transboundary rivers," the Ministry of Environment noted, while adding that within the framework of the "Improving Water Resources Management in Armenia" program funded by USAID (Agency for International Development), the South 2025-2030 watershed management area plan and river load calculation tool.
"Two hydrological observation points on the Akhuryan river are in the process of modernization, it is planned to modernize the Araks-Surmalu hydrological observation point as well", concluded the ministry.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia also emphasized that there is no official cooperation with Azerbaijan in the field of water management of transboundary rivers, at the same time it stated that, according to its information, contacts on the subject took place between the public organizations of the two states.
"There is no official cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the field of transboundary river water management.
The Republic of Armenia implements international and regional cooperation in the field of environmental protection, including water resources management, with interested countries that are committed to conscientiously and constructively fulfill their obligations arising from international law, including environmental conventions.
In particular, Armenia effectively cooperates with neighboring Georgia, Iran, as well as Turkey in the field of transboundary water resources management.
At the same time, we inform you that according to the information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contacts on the subject took place between the public organizations of the two states," the response of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
