The first session of the new composition of the Syrian People's Council (Parliament) will take place on July 6. This was announced by the Chairman of the High Election Commission of the People's Council, Muhammad Taha al-Ahmad. During the press conference, he published the names of the deputies elected as a result of the vote, and also presented the list of parliamentarians appointed by the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa. According to the current procedure for the formation of the Parliament, the President appoints one third of the deputy corps, 70 out of 210 seats, the remaining 140 mandates are distributed according to the results of the elections.
Al Shaara's appointees include 15 women, 21 more than last election. Officials did not specify how many of the newly appointed MPs represent religious and ethnic minorities, including Kurds, Christians and Alevis. Last year they were allotted 10 seats. Shaara is a member of Syria's Sunni Muslim majority.
The term of office of the new parliament will be 30 months with the possibility of extension. The swearing-in ceremony of the deputies of the new Syrian Parliament will take place today.
