Brussels has imposed sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities for the first time over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, EU foreign affairs chief Kaya Callas told a news conference after an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Cyprus.
"The ministers stated that Iran's actions to close the Strait of Hormuz are unacceptable. In response, EU countries approved sanctions against Iranian individuals and companies involved in closing the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first time that the EU has applied a regime of sanctions against freedom of navigation and will continue to do so," he stated.
"The resumption of a large-scale war in the region will have huge consequences. all parties must return to the negotiating table," Kalas said, commenting on the exchange of blows between Iran and Israel.
