German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful has stated that Europe is unable to defend itself without the American nuclear shield, calling for an end to the debate on NATO unity.
"I sincerely hope that we will end this debate, that we will stop questioning the NATO alliance and its unity. No one in Washington questions that. Without the US nuclear shield, we are unable to defend ourselves. This is the simple reality," the minister said in an interview with the Deutschlandfunk radio station, disagreeing with the interviewer's opinion that the US is gradually withdrawing from the bloc.
The minister noted that Europe should focus on fulfilling its obligation to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.
"We agreed on this last year at the NATO summit in The Hague. We in Germany are implementing it," the politician emphasized.
