Iran's state broadcaster reported that Iran's armed forces have launched the "Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz" exercise amid tensions in the Middle East and an increase in US military presence in the region.
"The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, part of the Iranian Armed Forces) "Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz" naval exercises have begun," the Iranian broadcaster reported.
For its part, Iran's SNN news agency notes that the drills will test the readiness of IRGC units, explore military scenarios for the IRGC to counter security threats in the Strait of Hormuz, and reflect the "swift, decisive and comprehensive response" of the Iranian armed forces.
US President Donald Trump previously announced that the second battle group of the US Navy will soon be deployed to the Middle East amid the escalation of the situation around Iran. He emphasized that this is necessary in case of failure of the agreement with Tehran.
