Russia and Armenia will assess the technical and financial conditions for the restoration of the two railway sections in order to connect them with the railways of Azerbaijan and Turkey in the future, Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk told reporters.
"In accordance with the request of the Armenian side and based on friendly and fraternal feelings towards the people of Armenia, the Russian Federation has decided to start meaningful negotiations on the restoration of two sections of the Armenian railways, which will ensure their connection with the railways of the Republic of Azerbaijan near Yeraskh, as well as with the railways of the Republic of Turkey near the village of Akhuryan", he stated.
The total length of the restored sections is 1.6 km and 12.4 km.
"During the negotiations, technical, financial and other conditions for the implementation of this project will be determined," said Overchuk.
According to him, the restoration of railway sections will provide Russia with a direct railway connection with the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, Turkey with the ports of the Mediterranean Sea, and Iran with the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.
"To solve this major challenge, work is being done to unblock all the disrupted routes in the Caucasus, including the possibility of restoring railway communication between the Russian Federation and Georgia through Abkhazia," Overchuk added.
According to him, Russia continues to work in the direction of unblocking economic and transport links in the South Caucasus region, in accordance with the agreements reached by the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2020-2021. At the end of 2025, he reminded, for the first time since 1991, railway traffic between Russia and Armenia through Azerbaijan and Georgia was restored.
