Macron acknowledged Europe's dependence on liquefied natural gas supplies from the United States

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that Europe's energy dependence has shifted from Russia to the United States, which has become the main supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union.

"If we take energy as an example, we have replaced our dependence on Russia with dependence on the United States, which supplies 60 percent of the liquefied natural gas we use," he said in an interview with Le Monde newspaper.

On January 26, the EU Council finally approved a complete ban on Russian LNG supplies to the European Union from January 1, 2027, and a ban on pipeline gas supplies from September 30, 2027.

At the same time, the ban on the import of LNG under short-term contracts will start as early as April 25, 2026, and short-term contracts for the supply of pipeline gas must be completed by June 17, 2026.
