Europe will never be able to survive without the United States, said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in an interview with the Financieele Dagblad newspaper.

"In my opinion, never. History is what united us. The American nuclear defense umbrella is the main guarantee of our security," said Rutte, answering the question whether Europe will ever be able to survive without the United States.

According to him, European countries still allocate too little funds for defense.
