The number of Nipah virus cases has reached 5

The Indian authorities are taking measures to prevent the outbreak of the Nipah virus, reports The Independent.

According to the newspaper, the first case of infection was registered on Monday, January 19. Since then, regional health authorities have imposed precautionary restrictions. About 100 people who were in contact with infected persons were placed under home quarantine.

Three of the new patients were hospitalized in Eastern Medical Institutions in Kolkata. Two other patients who were previously diagnosed with the virus remain in the intensive care unit of a private hospital. A high-ranking official of the State Health Department said that the condition of the nurse of one of the patients is gradually improving, but the condition of the other remains critical. Both are treated in the intensive care unit for patients with cardiovascular complications.
