Bloomberg: Europe may agree to surrender Greenland to please Washington

There is a risk that Europe may agree to hand over Greenland to the United States in an attempt to please Washington, Bloomberg reported, citing a senior official attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Many in Europe agree that "the post-World War II order is over" and that US President Donald Trump's territorial grab will change world politics. An agency source expressed concern that European leaders may agree to hand over Greenland to please Washington.

Bloomberg also notes that European officials were surprised by the loss of US support and the speed with which Washington switched from a friendly approach to opposition. Some openly agreed that they do not understand "how to respond to constantly changing threats and demands that do not obey logic," the agency notes.

"The American leader's renewed demands to hand over the world's largest island to Denmark, combined with new threats to impose tariffs and attempt to create a global security forum to rival the United Nations, came at a time when the community is vulnerable," the publication noted. The European Union, already divided by the conflict in Ukraine, according to the agency, "suffers from economic difficulties and is unsure how much it can rely on the US security guarantees that have once formed its foundation."

There is a sense that events are "getting out of hand as Europe, no matter what, moves toward a new and much more adversarial relationship with the White House," Bloomberg notes.
