The development of the situation around Greenland is still far from open and final discussions, and US President Donald Trump can reduce the tension and change the rhetoric at any time. Political scientist Alexander Asafov expressed this opinion in a comment to Lenta.ru, emphasizing that there are several options for Washington without drastic steps.
According to him, Trump can offer a deal on the placement of American military bases in Greenland or choose another format of cooperation. Asafov notes that there are two extreme scenarios. either the US completely abandons the issue of Greenland and maintains the existing arrangements, or tries to make the island part of the United States. However, the intermediate version is more likely, which will be formed after the stage of political pressure, announcements and "showing muscles".
According to the political scientist, the process may be extended, especially against the background that Trump has not yet had any obvious success in other directions: Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Ukraine or Gaza. At the same time, it is important for him that the possible deals around Greenland do not harm the results of the midterm elections scheduled for November 3 in the USA.
