Vatican Secretary of State (head of government) Cardinal Pietro Parolin has asked the Washington administration to postpone the action against Venezuela in order to avoid destabilization of the situation and bloodshed in the republic. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on January 10.
According to its sources, at the end of December, the cardinal asked the US ambassador to the Vatican, Brian Birch, about Washington's plans for Venezuela and tried to find out whether the US is seeking a change of power in the republic.
As noted in the publication, Parolin "has been trying for days to contact US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, desperately trying to prevent bloodshed and instability in Venezuela."
The article states that the cardinal asked the US President Donald Trump's administration to invite Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to leave the republic and "to show him patience in accepting this offer."
According to the publication, Parolin told Birch that Maduro can get asylum in Russia.
