After the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, US Chief of Staff George W. Bush told Russian President Vladimir Putin about his desire to unite in the fight against terrorism.
This is evidenced by the declassified documents of the US government, which were published on January 7 by the public research organization "National Security Archive" of George Washington University in the capital.
Among the released documents was the recording of a telephone conversation between the leaders of the Russian Federation and the United States on September 12, 2001.
"Let me say two things. You were the first leader to call yesterday. Thank you for that," said Bush Jr. to his Russian counterpart.
"Secondly, I am convinced that our country is at war. We are fighting a faceless coward. This is a new type of war.
I believe the world should work together and I look forward to working with you, sir. I look forward to working together in a renewed spirit and showing the world that freedom-loving people like you and me are united in the fight against these cowards," said Bush Jr., who served in the United States from 2001 to 2009.
