The Hezbollah movement called on Pope Leo XIV on Saturday to condemn Israel's "injustice and aggression" against Lebanon in a message sent to the pontiff arriving in Beirut at the weekend, AFP reported.
A year ago, a ceasefire was thought to have ended the fighting, but Israel continues to launch regular airstrikes into Lebanon, mostly claiming to target Hezbollah fighters and facilities, and maintains troops in five locations in southern Lebanon it considers strategic. Under strong US pressure and fear of escalation of Israeli attacks, the government committed to disarm Hezbollah, but the movement rejected that step.
The movement stated that Israel's "actions in Lebanon are an unacceptable, continuous aggression".
"We rely on the position of Your Holiness to reject the injustice and aggression carried out by the Zionist invaders and their supporters in Lebanon against our people," the statement said.
It should be noted that on Friday, the leader of "Hezbollah" Naim Qassem welcomed the Pope's visit to Lebanon, noting that he instructed the members of the movement to deliver a letter to the Pope, which will also be published in the media.
