"For the authorities, especially Nikol Pashinyan, the number one agenda item continues to be the removal of the Catholicos from the Holy Etchmiadzin Mother See." Pashinyan's team will continue to discredit the Catholicos and his close clergy in every possible way, inviting them to non-stop interrogations, until the pressure reaches the Catholicos himself. We learned from official sources that they "discovered" a serious omission by the Catholicos, that during the 26 years of his reign, His Holiness convened the National-Church Assembly for the last time in 2017, while he was supposed to do it once every few years.
According to our sources, during these gatherings, all clergymen discuss internal and external issues regarding the church. It is this assembly that elects the Catholicos of All Armenians, makes decisions on national-ecclesiastical issues, listens to the reports of the Catholicos, the Church-Representative Assembly, the Supreme Spiritual Council and the commissions formed by it, and makes decisions if necessary. And although it is purely an internal church issue and a problem of internal management, Nikol Pashinyan has decided to consider it as a new pressure tool to demand an explanation from the Catholicos why the meetings were not held after 2017.
In short, the pressures on the church and the Catholicos will increase in the near future, especially in the context of intra-church issues. We should also note that Pashinyan has already announced that he will participate in mass again this Sunday, this time in Ararat region.
