The Parliament of Latvia has approved the decision to withdraw the country from the Istanbul Convention, a treaty aimed at preventing violence against women and domestic violence. Latvia ratified the Istanbul Convention in November 2023, reports LRT.
The proposal was accepted in the first reading in the parliament, after receiving the support of the deputies of the ruling coalition. it was approved by the Foreign Relations Committee on October 30.
The final reading of the proposal was adopted in the parliament on October 31, after about 13 hours of discussions. The proposal to withdraw from the convention was presented by the opposition right-wing "Latvia First" party in September. According to the Delfi periodical, 56 MPs of the opposition parties supported the decision, as well as the "Union of Greens and Farmers", 32 MPs voted against.
