A doctor has explained how many nuts you should eat to protect against dementia

To reduce the risk of dementia, you need to include about 30 grams of unsalted nuts in your diet, according to Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist at the Kindred Clinic in San Francisco. The Daily Mirror quoted him as saying.

According to the doctor, walnuts contain antioxidants, minerals, fiber and beneficial fatty acids. These substances reduce inflammation in the body and maintain normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Previous studies have shown that hypertension is a risk factor for both vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease (which involves protein deposits in the brain). Scientists have also found that high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood are associated with a higher risk of developing these diseases.

The specialist notes that walnuts are especially useful because they are rich in plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

"The UK Biobank study found that people who eat 30 grams of unsalted nuts every day have a 17% lower risk of dementia compared to those who don't eat them," the doctor emphasized.

Sethi added that walnuts are not a "magic" medicine. a positive effect is observed only with a balanced diet. He also noted that people prone to kidney stones should avoid nuts high in oxalates (almonds, Brazil nuts). Those with high blood pressure should limit their consumption of salted walnuts due to their high sodium content.
