The jewels stolen from the Louvre were not insured because they were French property, Le Parisien newspaper reported.
"The stolen items belong to the state museum and, therefore, are the public property of the state. The State bears sole responsibility for jewelry...it assumes the risk of loss, theft, or damage to those items. The state is a "self-insurer", the article states.
The head of the French insurance company Serex Assurances, Romain Dechelet, confirmed to journalists that the museum cannot claim compensation without insurance.
