Scientists have discovered a combination of two substances that can extend life

The combined effect of the hormone oxytocin and an inhibitor of the Alk5 enzyme can significantly extend the lifespan of aged male mice. Scientists of the University of California came to this conclusion. The results of the study were published in "Aging" magazine.

Oxytocin is known as the "bonding hormone". it plays an important role in forming social bonds and reducing stress. The Alk5 inhibitor (designated A5i) suppresses the activity of a protein associated with age-related changes and inflammation. Scientists believe that this combined effect can slow down the aging process.

The experiments involved 25-month-old rodents, which is about 75 years old in humans.

Mice were regularly given the combined drug. As a result, the average lifespan of treated males increased by 73% and overall survival by 14% compared to the control group. Moreover, their memory, motor coordination and physical activity improved, and blood aging biomarkers approached those of younger individuals.

According to scientists, the therapy was effective only for males. No significant changes in life expectancy were observed in women. The reasons for these differences remain unclear. The researchers plan to continue testing to better understand the mechanisms of action of oxytocin and the Alk5 inhibitor.

These results open perspectives for extending active life and developing new approaches to combat age-related disorders. However, experts emphasize that the use of such methods requires rigorous testing of safety and effectiveness.
