In December 2005, the Azerbaijani soldiers in the Armenian cemetery in Jugha destroyed thousands of medieval Armenian khachkars and tombstones, hammering and other instruments, throwing them into the river between Azerbaijan and Iran. One year after the destruction of the cemetery, the President of Azerbaijan described the "consequence of the Armenian imagination".
This place was the world's largest medieval Armenian cemetery, thousands of unique medieval monuments. Researcher Simon Maghakyan, who studied the Armenian heritage in Nakhichevan, noted in one of the interviews. "The destruction of the Jugha cemetery is the biggest and impunity of the destruction of the Armenian heritage in the Nakhichevan region."
