A spreading myth about overweight hazards has been scattered

Danish scientists have questioned the popular opinion on "normal weight". A new study in the annual meeting of the European Association (EASD) in Vienna has shown that the body's mass index (BMI) has no greater chance of death than those whose weight was considered "healthy" (22.5-25 kg / m²).

Moreover, people in the lower and middle limits of the norm (18.5-22.5 kg / m) had a higher risk of death. For example, in the case of 18.5-20 BMI, the probability of death was twice as higher than in a comparative group, and in case of 20-22.5 BMI, 27% higher. Researchers explain these results by the fact that the loss of weight in some participants can be related to the disease, not good health.

"Obesity and Terkash are global serious challenges. However, we saw that mortality is growing not only in people with severe obesity or undercover, but also in a normal but low body mass index, "said St. Aarhus University Stan Diabetes Center.

Heavy fat (body mass index) really doubled the risk of death, and at 35-40 kg / m, the risk increased by 23%. However, in general, the data showed that moderately excess weight should not be related to the shorter of life.

"It is not the body mass index play the main role, but the distribution of fat in the body. The fat of the internal organs in the abdomen is metabolically active and increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, fat accumulations on thighs or buttocks can be relatively safe, "said Professor Jens Meldgaard Brun.

The authors emphasize that obesity should be treated in a personalized way, taking not only the body mass index, but also the deployment of fatty tissue as well as accompanying diseases.
