Physicists first discovered hidden mechanisms for protection from bridges

Scientists from Valencia's Polytechnic and Vigo University have found out why steel bridges are able to withstand catastrophic effects such as strikes or earthquakes without completely collapsing. The work was published in Nature magazine.

Researchers have found that such bridges develop hidden strength in the event of localization. Their structures redistribute the burden and continue to operate, and sometimes even face greater forces than at normal operation. This effect was surprisingly similar to the behavior of the web. How can the damaged web still keep his hunting, so the bridge remains a stable partial collapse?

"We have shown that due to these secondary mechanisms, bridges can maintain their trucks and not be blown after one of the elements," said Jose M. Adam:

The results will help develop new strengthens and safety requirements for bridges, as well as create more efficient strategies for their monitoring, condition evaluation and repair. The authors emphasize that the problem is especially relevant in the background of extremely deterioration of extremely natural phenomena and infrastructure.

"The secret is again in nature," Adam said. "Last year we showed that the buildings could be more resilient, inspired by the structure of the lizards, and now we turned to the web. Comparison with the study of the 2012 study structures, compared to the bridges of its behavior. "
