Princess Diana's black silk dress, dubbed the "revenge dress," will be auctioned for the first time in nearly 30 years. Designer Kristina Stambolian's legendary outfit will become the main lot of Sotheby's evening auction in New York, which will take place on December 9, Vogue British reports.
The cost of the dress was estimated at 150-300 thousand dollars. Before the auction, it will be shown to the public in London, Hong Kong and Geneva.
Diana wore the dress to the Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in London in June 1994. On the same day, the interview of her ex-husband, the then Prince Charles, was aired, in which he confessed to infidelity during the marriage.
Initially, Diana planned to choose a different outfit for the event, but changed her mind at the last moment. Stambolyan's off-the-shoulder dress has been in her wardrobe for about three years, but previously the princess considered it too bold for a public performance. Diana's image was completed by a pearl wedding necklace, red nails and lip color of the same shade.
After this speech, the dress became known as the "revenge dress" and became a symbol of a confident public image after the breakup. Diana never wore it in public again.
