The US space agency has announced that NASA and the US Department of Energy are preparing the technological foundation for missions to Mars and the outer Solar System.
"NASA, along with the US Department of Energy, will ensure the development of the capabilities necessary for sustainable space exploration beyond the Moon and future missions to Mars and the outer Solar System," the agency said in a statement.
NASA added that as part of this program, the Space Reactor-1 Freedom spacecraft is scheduled to arrive on Mars by the end of 2028 and deploy infrastructure and Ingenuity-class drones to further explore the planet and the solar system.
