The head of the anti-corruption committee, Artur Nahapetyan, announced yesterday that there will be new defendants in the "March 1" case in the near future. However, the head of the committee did not elaborate on who the new defendants will be. In the case of March 1, the investigation against the second president of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, Armen Gevorgyan, Seyran Ohanyan and Grigory Khachaturov has been going on for years.
A few days ago, the law enforcement officers announced that in the framework of the "March 1" case, charges were brought against the former deputy police chief of Yerevan, Robert Melkonyan, and the former police chief of Armenia, Valery Osipyan. In the "March 1" criminal proceedings, Sasha Afyan, who held the position of Deputy Chief of the RA Police, is also accused. The preliminary investigation has been completed, and the materials of the proceedings have been sent to the court with an indictment.
According to "Pasti" information, the prosecutor's office intends to bring charges against two former deputies of the chief of police, who in 2008 they were in office on March 1. In particular, we are talking about First Deputy Police Chief Ararat Mahtesyan, Deputy Police Chief Hovhannes Hunanyan, RA Police Deputy Chief - Head of the Main Investigative Department Gagik Hambardzumyan. Mahtesyan was dismissed from the post of first deputy police chief in 2008. in June, Hunanyan in 2013. in October.
Both of them were not particularly active after being sent to the reserve army. Gagik Hambardzumyan was dismissed from his position in 2018. in January, and already in 2021. In the elections, he was in the 55th place on the election list of the "Armenia" alliance. According to our sources, the criminal case against these ex-policemen will be initiated under the same article as in the case of Sasha Afyan, for forcibly dispersing protesters from Freedom Square and using violence.
