The European Union and Japan signed an agreement on strategic partnership

The European Union and Japan signed an agreement on strategic partnership, which also envisages cooperation in the fields of security and defense.

The document was signed in Tokyo by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. The Japanese foreign minister said the agreement will enter into force on January 1, 2025.

"In the Indo-Pacific region, Japan is the first country to sign such an agreement with the EU," he said. Borel, in turn, said that thanks to the agreement, security in the Asia-Pacific region will be strengthened.
