US President Donald Trump's policy of imposing tariffs on European states and his plans for Greenland contradict a number of articles of the NATO Charter. An unnamed diplomat from a member country of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization told Politico that opinion.
According to him, Trump, by threatening to impose tariffs on European states and talking about the possibility of occupying Greenland, violates the second and third articles of the charter. According to those articles, NATO member states should "endeavour to eliminate contradictions in their international economic policy and promote the development of economic cooperation". In addition, they are obliged to "maintain and develop their individual and collective capabilities to combat armed attack."
As Politico notes, based on conversations with diplomats and politicians, against this background, the priority task of the current NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has become "keeping the US on the side of Europe under the conditions of Trump's presidency".
