US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani discussed issues related to the detention of "Islamic State" terrorists in prisons on January 25.
This is stated in the written statement of Tommy Pigott, the deputy press spokesman of the US State Department. The document states that "the Secretary of State appreciated the Iraqi government's initiative and its leading role in expediting the process of transferring IS terrorists and keeping them in protected facilities in Iraq after the recent instability in northeastern Syria."
It also follows from the statement that Rubio and al-Sudani discussed "diplomatic efforts to ensure that countries immediately repatriate their citizens in Iraq in order to bring them to justice."
According to Pigott, Rubio and al-Sudani "also discussed the ongoing consultations on the formation of the government in Iraq."
The Secretary of State "emphasized that an Iranian-controlled government cannot effectively prioritize Iraq's interests, keep the country out of regional conflicts, or ensure a mutually beneficial partnership between the United States and Iraq."
