A 12-year-old boy died from a shark attack. Sydney

12-year-old Niko Antic died in hospital from severe injuries after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour.

Niko Antic was jumping off a cliff with his friends when he was attacked by a shark. The attack took place in Vaucluse, just 9 kilometers from the center of Sydney. The shark inflicted deep wounds on both legs of the boy, after which his friends pulled him ashore and called emergency doctors.

In an official statement, Nico's parents described him as a "happy, friendly and athletic boy" who was always full of life. However, the doctors could not save the boy due to serious blood loss.

The incident is one of four reported shark attacks along the New South Wales coast in two days. There have been multiple reports of shark attacks on Australia's east coast last week, including three in Sydney.

A surfer escaped unhurt from a shark ambush on Sydney's northern beaches on Monday, and hours later a 27-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries in a shark attack on a neighboring beach.

A day later, a man was pulled from the water after being bitten by a shark on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.

A 39-year-old man suffered a chest injury and was taken to the hospital. The shark attacks followed torrential rains, which experts say have created "perfect storm" conditions for bull sharks, which prefer murky water. Rain, they say, infuses the water with nutrients, which can bring sharks closer to shore.

All Sydney beaches were closed to protect the public until the weather improved. Most of them reopened over the Australia Day long weekend.
