Villagers in eastern India are forced to sleep on roofs and trees as a wild elephant that has already killed at least 22 people is yet to be caught.

Among the dead are four children, including an eight-month-old infant. Horrific footage shows villagers fleeing in panic as an angry elephant runs after them.

Many villagers have left their dilapidated homes.

Authorities say the male elephant is in a state known as "must," which corresponds to the male's breeding season and is characterized by high levels of testosterone, extreme aggression and uncontrollable behavior. This condition is said to last up to 20 days.

Indian authorities launched a major operation involving more than 100 forest rangers to neutralize the elephant. At least 80 police officers are searching for the animal and trying to find it.
