The European Union can respond to the threats of US President Donald Trump in different ways. In particular, with the imposition of customs duties on goods from the USA, the "trade grenade" or rapprochement with China, writes Politico.

"The EU has several options to respond to Trump's imposition of tariffs on eight European countries. But it should be understood that retaliatory actions can lead to a new trade war," the article states. Thus, Brussels can impose customs duties on 93 billion euros worth of American exports.

The authors of the article also call the "commercial grenade launcher" the "most powerful weapon" in the EU arsenal. As mentioned, this mechanism allows to impose additional taxes on technology corporations, limit investments, narrow or close access to the European Union market.

The EU can also play the "China card", that is, gradually start rapprochement with China, as Canada did.
