The Republic of Korea has received an invitation from US President Donald Trump to join the Gaza Peace Council, "Hangyore" newspaper reports, referring to an official of the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The invitation was received recently. A decision on participation can be made after a comprehensive assessment of which other countries will participate. It will take time to discuss this," said the South Korean diplomat.
Earlier, the Axios portal, citing an American official, reported that the leaders of 58 states received an invitation from Trump to join the "Peace Council".
The body is expected to begin work in October 2025 in the second phase of a peace plan agreed between Israel and the radical Palestinian Hamas movement, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, the United States and Turkey.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said that he had received an invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council and that the possibility was being discussed.
