More than half of Ukrainians opposed the withdrawal of Ukrainian armed forces from Donbass

54% of Ukrainians categorically exclude the possibility of handing Donbas over to Russia in exchange for security guarantees from the US and Europe.

This is evidenced by the results of the survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) on January 9-14, 2026.

According to the institute, 39% of respondents are ready to agree to such a step, "but with the requirement of significant security guarantees".

"The majority of Ukrainians, 54%, consider it absolutely unacceptable to hand over the entire Donbas to Russia in exchange for security guarantees. At the same time, 39% are ready to make such a concession, although most of them admit that it is a difficult condition. "Another 5% are undecided," KIIS reported.

35% of those who do not agree with handing Donbas over to Russia believe that the conflict can continue after that.
Thirty-three percent are convinced that "Ukraine cannot simply give up its territories," and 25% do not believe that the West's security guarantees are realistic.
