The international team of scientists found that music can not only wake up emotions and memories, but also to influence what we remember, the common essence or details of the event. Emotional irritation after listening to music can move the memory balance to the "global" or "detail" perception. The work was published in the journal The Journal of Neuroscience (JN).
130 students took part in the experience. After watching the images of everyday subjects, some have heard classical music in different emotional shades, while others have neutral sounds or silence. They were later asked to distinguish the images already seen from new or similar images.
It turned out that not the genre of music, but especially the change in the level of emotional irritation. Moderate increase in irritation is better to remember small details, while strong irritation or, on the contrary, has helped maintain only the common context in memory.
The authors emphasize that this discovery may be important for the development of memory and mood disorders. However, the response to music was found to be very individual. Classical music did not cause the same emotions to all participants. Therefore, scientists see the next step of the study in a personalized music choice.
