In New York, the unofficial meeting on the Cyprus issue has ended in New York, as expected without progress, Euronews writes. The gathering was attended by leaders of the Greek and Turkish communities of the island and the leaders of the three British Minutes of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. The participants of the meeting held in the United States were the reaffirmation to continue the dialogue in Geneva and reaffirm their commitment to mutual trust.
According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterresh, four of the six initiatives in this area have already been implemented. These include the establishment of the Youth Technical Committee, the initiatives in the fields of ecology and climate change, recovery of cemeteries and the agreement on the closure of mines. Discussions on the use of solar energy in the opening of the other two points, the opening of the four checkpoints and the use of solar energy in the buffer zone will continue.
Cyprus was divided into two parts in 1974, when Turkey was occupied by 40% of the island. Communities are trying to reconcile, but after the failure of official talks in 2017, the settlement process is slow.
