The British government has allowed 16 and 17 people to vote in the parliamentary elections, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rey said, Sky News reports.
According to him, the authorities are taking steps to eliminate the obstacles to the elections. The relevant decision will allow more citizens to participate in British democratic processes, Reys said.
The politician stressed that the Government of the Labor Party, thus, fulfills its pre-election promise to adolescents. The proposal will be submitted to the parliament in the near future.
Sky News notes that the last time electoral age was lowered in 1969, from 21 to 18. Currently, British citizens aged 16 and 17 have the right to vote in the local Scottish and Wales elections. After the adoption of the new law, the residents of England and Northern Ireland will also be able to take part in the local voting.
