NATO Secretary General Mark Ruten has said that the governments of the countries will make a decision on compulsory conscription in Europe. In an interview with The New York Times, he adversely answered the question of whether Europe should have a mandatory conscription in the armed forces.

"No, no, it will depend on individual countries. Some countries will do it. There is already conscription in Finland. Others will not do it, but in general it will mean to pay a good salary of men and women in our uniform, "said Ruten.
