More than 20 injured in fire at suit factory in Brazil

A fire broke out at a factory that produces carnival costumes in Rio de Janeiro, injuring at least 21 people, local news agency Agencia Brasil reported.

A major fire broke out at a factory in the northern part of the city on Wednesday. There were people in the building at the time of the fire, who were trapped on the second floor.

“In total, firefighters rescued 21 victims from the building,” the agency said. The victims were reportedly hospitalized, with at least 11 in serious condition. Many of the victims suffered respiratory burns.

The deputy commander of the Rio de Janeiro fire department said the fire was under control and that the building did not have a permit to operate.

The garment factory was reportedly used by at least three samba schools participating in the Rio de Janeiro carnival.
