The authorities of Ukraine demanded from the White House to cancel the ban on the use of American weapons to strike targets in Russia, writes Politico.
According to the newspaper, this week a group of Ukrainian parliamentarians went to Washington to ask for Congress's support in this matter. According to them, the US policy "constrains the actions of the Ukrainian military" and does not allow Kiev to strike Russian military depots.
"The main issue now is the White House's policy to limit our ability to strike military targets inside Russia," David Arakhamia, chairman of Ukraine's ruling Servant of the People party, said during a visit to Washington.
Politico notes that the Ukrainian command watched for several weeks as the Russian military concentrated near the border before the attack on Kharkiv, and at the same time, because of Washington's policy, could not use American weapons against them in a preemptive strike.
"We saw that their military was sitting one or two kilometers from the Russian border, and we could not do anything about it," said Alexandra Ustinova, head of the special parliamentary committee on armaments of Ukraine.
Despite this, two US officials emphasized in a conversation with Politico. that the US position on this matter has not changed.
Earlier, the British government lifted the ban on the use of British weapons inside Russia. "Ukraine has the right to do that. Since Russia is attacking Ukrainian territory, one can understand why Ukraine feels the need to take care of its defense," British Foreign Minister David Cameron said during his visit to Kyiv.
