Aren, a leopard who lost his front paw and recovered, disappeared from Vayots Dzor in 2022, but 2 years later he appeared in Tavush. WWF Armenia

We are happy to share our remarkable news from Tavush forests, for the second time in four years we managed to register a leopard in Tavush region. WWF Armenia informs. "This once again confirms the information circulating since the Soviet years about meeting a leopard in Tavush. The individual depicted in the photo has its own exciting story.
It was first discovered in February 2019 in Vayots Dzor by the rangers of the protected landscape "Arpa". A year later, while still in Vayots Dzor, Aren, as we named this male leopard, had lost his front paw, but had recovered and was able to hunt successfully.
Aren disappeared from Vayots Dzor and from our sight in December 2022, and two years later, he appeared in Tavush, 150 km away from the "Arpa" protected landscape.

This discovery would not have been possible without the preparation and vigilance of Arman Gabrielyan, our community ranger in Tavush, who in 2019 also became the "motivator" to discover Tavush's first leopard.

Thus, WWF Armenia's leopard monitoring program expanded to northern Armenia, where we have been tracking wild animals with cameras for the past 4 years.

Since 2002, WWF Armenia has been implementing the "Leopard Conservation in Armenia" program in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, which includes the monitoring of leopards and their prey species. The project is financed by WWF Germany and WWF Switzerland.
