Authorities in China's southern Guangdong province have evacuated more than 340,000 residents as Typhoon Hongxia (international name: Knowle) approaches, according to the provincial flood and drought management headquarters. The typhoon, with wind speed of 42-48 m/s, is forecast to hit the coast between Shenzhen and Huilai on the night of July 25-26. After making landfall, the typhoon will continue to move northward, gradually weakening. During the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is expected in Guangdong, the capital of Guangdong Province. Meteorologists predict 50-100 mm of precipitation, in some regions up to 250 mm. Earlier, China announced an orange (high) alert for several regions due to the approaching typhoon. There are four disaster alert levels in China: red (highest), orange (high), yellow (high) and blue (medium). Based on these levels, the government deploys the necessary resources to minimize damage, prevent casualties, and mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Summer in China is traditionally characterized by heavy rains, typhoons, floods and geological disasters.
